movie review: we need to talk about kevin

i watched the movie last night. i had it for so long but i never watched it because i didn't have the mood. but last night i decided that i must watch it or else i won't.
considering that i read the book, the plot was easily comprehended.   however, if you never read the movie, i welcome you to the world of confusion.
there's something chilling about how the story march back and forth in the movie. from the tomato festival to the red paint to the halloween costume to the water pump and the cracked eggs. all of it mere part of the book, carefully crafted via the point of view of a mother who at some point reluctant of her own son and the other fight for his attention.
i think all Kevin want was attention from his mother. he seemed to detected that her mother didn't really wanted him at first, (mommy was happy before little Kevin come along, now everyday mommy wake up every morning and wish she was in France). but it was not hugs and kisses that he wanted out of his mother, no, he enjoy riled her up to the point where she cracked. and when she cracked to Kevin, he had won.
the ultimate of cracking his mother up  is when he murdered his father, sister Celia (who is totally opposite of him) and a few schoolmates in a well planned massacre.
other people maybe had bailed on him, let him rot in jail or whatever, but not Eva. she still visited him at fixed time. granted, the visit was lack of conversation but it shows that whatever it is, to Eva, Kevin is the only relation to her deceased husband (Franklin) that she had. Kevin in a way still had a piece of her that was shattered the day he murdered the family. at the nearly end of the movie we can see that Eva painted a room in the small house the same blue like in Kevin's old room and arrange his furniture the way he did in the old house, with no personal influence.  in a way, it shows that Eva still welcome him home, after he finished his time at Sing Sing.
this movies didn't consist a lot of dialogue. Eva expressed her feeling through her action so did Kevin, by the way he looked at Eva.
the director (Lynne Ramsay)  and the actors managed to bring the deep feeling from the book into the movie and at the same time didn't lose the chill that Lionel Shriver had crafted in the book.
playing the character Eva, tilda swinton brings up back and forth inside her memory of the incident. ahe showed a great deal of emotion without much conversation. but the chilling factor that was brought bu Ezra Miller (kevin) is really what make the movie special. Ezra Miller is the perfect Kevin K.

kanak-kanak dan pembunuhan

kebelakangan ni terlalu banyak berita tentang kematian kanak-kanak disiarkan. terutama sekali akibat kekejaman israel. pagi tadi pulak aku terbaca berita tentang school shooting kat U.S.

book review: paper towns

another book from my favorite author, john green. paper towns is about  a boy who had been crushing on this girl forever. one night of a well cooked plan give him hope but alas, the girl disappeared, leaving a bread crumbs trail for the boy to follow.

paper towns is a really good read. i love the road trip part the most. i honestly don't think the story is really about Quentin's love towards Margo but it is more about the friendship in between Q, Ben and Radar and also acceptance in between Lacey and Ben. in this story, i think Lacey is braver than Margo. she loves Ben and she is not afraid to show it. she maybe was ditched from the popular crowd but she didn't wallow over it. she took it like a champ. hell, she literally sponsored the road trip. she wasn't afraid to be seen with the unpopular crowd and she cherish them like how people cherish their friends. she jumped head first into the road trip not because she is with Ben (clingy GF, yikes) but she wanted to find Margo. i think john green simply un'pigeonholed' Lacey to tell the world that we can be with anyone we like, we can be awesome in our own way. Lacey is also a symbol of breaking the peer pressure.

paper town make me reflect on how we see others and how we see ourselves. what we see in people probably not really what she/he is. it maybe just the surface of a deeper feeling.
i think we see people just like we see ourselves in mirrors. we don't really see beneath the skin that was showing. just like people, we don't really see them except for what they show us and for what we want to believe.

and i think Margo  Roth Spiegelman is a selfish bitch.

the biggest bitches of them all

everyone who had watched a teen flick/ girl romance surely well acquitted with the bitch of the story. the queen bee, the  mean girl. well today i'm gonna list down three of my favorite bitches in  movie/TV shows.

first, the evil manifestation of Regina George of Mean Girls. she's fabulous but she's evil. she is the bitch that got run over by the bus. her plan on revenge was not so cool but her wardrobe are to die for and her one liners are just simply put, stabbing. she single handedly caused a mayhem in highschool.  Regina is not someone you wanna cross. if hell bent on revenge, the burn book was milder compared to what she can craft.

my next favorite bitch is Courtney Shane from the movie  Jawbreaker (1999).  Courtney Alice Shayne is the most popular, dominant and mean girl of school and loves it! Nobody stands in her way of getting what she wants. But when she and her friends Marcie and Julie kill their friend Liz by mistake, they swear to hide it. But when the nerdy Fern witnesses the murder, Courtney is forced into transforming her into the beautiful Vylette as an composation of silencing the truth. now, how's that for a cold blooded bitch. courtney was well aware  of her chances to be the prom queen now that the gentle queen, Liz is dead. she can act all nonchalant and put a good "i-don't-do-anything-wrong" facade so well that it needed a good luck to bring her down.

Still of Rose McGowan and Julie Benz in Jawbreaker

but the best bitch is Blair Waldorf. sassy one liners, beauty and wardrobe to die for, Blair is the mastermind of evil scheme. she is the Blair Bitch of  Upper East Side. she had power, money to execute and make such a damn good use of the Gossip Girl. (it really helps of Gossip girl favors you). this girl knows what she want and how to get it. she harnessed her headband to be her crown and only her can wear it better.  she didn't care about sinking her claws on her own best friend is if what it takes to have what she want. she is adorable yet dangerous. her evil plotting and scheming not only limit to the girls but also the boys. she is dreaming of becoming a powerful woman and she is on her way...

Yup, that's  three bitches are really good.... bitches!

movie review: the da vinci code

i watched the movies weeks ago but didn't manage to review it because my blog seem to go down or something. well the da vinci code the movie is okay because it gave the whole ideas in a much more realistic ways. however i am a bit dissapointed in the character sophie. in the book, sophie is brilliant and can crack the code by herself. even giving ideas to Landon, but the movie sophie is meek and, well she was always dumbfounded. i gonna give 3 out of 5 to this movie.

movie review: the woman in black

assignment da siap so layan movie la sbb nak memujuk hati   celebrate. so semalam donlod citer the Woman In black lakonad daniel radcliffe.

citer ni mmg seram la n lakonan daniel dalam ni berbeza barbanding semasa dalam harry potter. i tend to find the similarities (nostalgic much?) especially during the train ride. but in this movie Dan convey his feeling through his bady language, which shows haw much he has matured in this acting business.

bagi aku movie ni mmg scary la. losts of suprise element in it. knp scary, well ader hantu perempuan, n kanak-kanak. ade scary dools and toys and the time setting. keseluruhan cerita ni mmg baik dengan ending yang twisted giler. tp yg penting - don't go chasing shadows.

always thought this doll was scary. and it is...

a song of ice and fire series

my favret thing to do... read!
this time i had collected the five books of the A Song Of Ice and Fire series. can't wait for the holiday to read it.
yahoo!!!
what is A Song Of Ice And Fire?
well it is:

A Song of Ice and Fire is a series of epic fantasy novels written by American novelist and screenwriter George R. R. Martin. Martin began the series in 1991 and published the first volume, A Game of Thrones, in 1996. Martin gradually extended the originally planned trilogy into four, six and eventually seven volumes. The fifth installment, A Dance with Dragons, took over five years of writing until being published in 2011. The sixth book, The Winds of Winter, is being written.
The story of A Song of Ice and Fire takes place on the fictional continents Westeros and Essos, with a history of thousands of years. The series is told in the third person by point of view characters, whose number reaches 31 by the fifth novel. Three stories become interwoven: the chronicling of a dynastic war for control of Westeros by several families; the rising threat of the dormant cold supernatural Others dwelling beyond an immense wall of ice on Westeros' northern border; and the ambition of Daenerys Targaryen, the exiled daughter of a king murdered in a civil war shortly before her birth, to return to Westeros with her fire-breathing dragons and claim her rightful throne.
Drawing inspiration from historical events such as the English period of the Wars of the Roses, Martin defied the conventions of the high fantasy genre. The series received praise for its realism; it subdues magic in favor of battles and political intrigue. Violencesexualityand moral ambiguity are frequently displayed among a set of over a thousand named characters. Major characters are repeatedly killed off so that readers cannot rely on the supposed heroes to remain safe and sound. The multiple viewpoint structure allows characters to be explored from many sides so that the supposed villains can provide their viewpoint. A Song of Ice and Fire also received critical commentary for its diverse portrayal of women and religion.
Originally published without much publicity, the books in the series have now sold more than 22 million copies worldwide[2] and have been translated into more than 20 languages. The fourth and fifth volumes reached the top of The New York Times Best Seller listsupon their releases.[3] Among the many derived works are three prequel novellas, the HBO TV series Game of Thrones, a comic book adaptation, and several cardboard and video games. (wikipedia)

technically more people knew it as the games of thrones, bcoz that was the name of its tv series.....
biase tngok gmbar ni??

one way or another, they are a bit the same

(yeah, i am that bored)

i dreamed of hunger games...

last night i dream of hunger games.
well in my dream i was cooking egg in potatoes (camping style) with some of the tributes, then while waiting for the potatoes to cook, i went somewhere ( i didn't exactly remember where).
when i went back to the potatoes, it was all done but no one  (other tributes) was there to eat it with me.
then i woke up and started thinking.

1. it was the hunger games, a tribute can't make friends with other tributes.
2. lots of things can happen in the span of cooking potatoes in hunger games, they all could be dead.
3. it was a dream

nevertheless, i woke up happy b'coz i guess i had a little feeling of what it is like to be in the hunger games (albeit slightly different)

safe and sound vs rue's / primrose's lullab

in the Hunger Games (book), there is a song that katniss sung to Rue when she was near her death. this song was a lullaby she (Katniss) used to sing to her sister, Primrose when she was ill.
here is the lyrics:

(let just call the song Rue's Lullaby)

Deep in the meadow, under the willow
A bed of grass, a soft green pillow
Lay down your head, and close your sleepy eyes
And when again they open, the sun will rise.

Here it's safe, here it's warm
Here the daisies guard you from every harm
Here your dreams are sweet and tomorrow brings them true
Here is the place where I love you.

Deep in the meadow, hidden far away
A cloak of leaves, A moonbeam ray
Forget your woes and let your troubles lay
And when again it's morning, they'll wash away.

Here it's safe, here it's warm
Here the daisies guard you from every harm
Here your dreams are sweet and tomorrow brings them true
Here is the place where I love you.

to me, this is one of the most significant moments in the hunger games, i'm glad the film maker keep this scene

when looking up for this lyric, i found the official one sing by Sting entitled Deep In The Meadow. here is the link for those who like to listen to the official one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEG7QbDuu0Y
i however prefer the independent version one. the one that was made by Adrisaurus (at least that what her youtube profile name). here is the link for those who like to listen to this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suJqCw3SAZw and i suggest yoou better listen to this one.

however, this is not about which rue's lullaby is better, b/coz both had delivered the song in their very unique and special way. it was about another song.
enter Safe And Sound by Taylor Swift ft. The Civil Wars. the song was written by Miss Swift herself and it was one of the original soundtrack for the 2012 film, the Hunger Games.

here is the lyrics of the song by Taylor:

safe and sound

I remember tears streaming down your face
When I said, "I’ll never let you go"
When all those shadows almost killed your light
I remember you said, "Don’t leave me here alone"
But all that’s dead and gone and passed tonight

Just close your eyes
The sun is going down
You’ll be alright
No one can hurt you now
Come morning light
You and I will be safe and sound

Don’t you dare look out your window darling
Everything’s on fire
The war outside our door keeps raging on
Hold onto this lullaby
Even when the music’s gone… gone

Just close your eyes
The sun is going down
You’ll be alright
No one can hurt you now
Come morning light
You and I will be safe and sound

Just close your eyes
You’ll be alright
Come morning light,
You and I’ll be safe and sound…

just close your eyes
you'll be alright,
come morning light,
you and i'll be safe and sound

now, if we study both lyrics, and replace the Taylor's one into the novel it could still make perfect sense, right?
the two lyrics had quite the same meaning. it was about letting go of nightmares here and embrace the future. it might be bit crude, considering that Rue's future was death but in my opinion it was all the same.
Taylor had really impersonate the mood and feeling in her song with Katniss' own mood and feeling,  and it was one of her greatest ballads. it was great considering she didn't need another break-up to come up with the mood for this  song. but i think she can just figure out the feeling, mood and theme of the song by reading the book and studying Rue's lullaby.  (i surely can)

however, to be fair, Safe and Sound deal with much more real (in the movie) deal. the song really reflects the mood  and feeling of the entire movie while Rue's Lullaby is just one Katniss had in her mind to gather her wits, so that she can win this. it was the song, (i think) Katniss will sing to herself, as if to delude herself that one day she'll wake up and figure out that this all was a dream. and in this case, that's why she sang the song to Rue on her deathbed. she was hoping that wherever Rue opened her eyes, she'll always relieved her horrible memory of  being in the Hunger Games and being speared to the stomach as one nasty nightmares.

between this two songs, i can't decide which one i like better. Adrisaurus version of Rue's Lullaby was sweet and lulling, as it should be as a lullaby, Sting's version was too slow, i'll never sing it to my baby meanwhile Safe And Sound was easy to the ears and we had the tendency to sing along.

i love both songs,  and i love how another song (Safe and Sound) was written in honour of all the tributes in the Hunger Games and how Rue's Lullaby was the one that keep Katniss going.

manusia dan pertandingan

"dulu aku...."
"tu bukan benda, dulu aku penah...."
"eleh, aku dulu penah..."

IF I WERE TO GOING DOWN, I'LL BE DAMNED IF I GO DOWN WITHOUT A FIGHT!

book review: the fault in our stars

another masterpiece by john green. honestly, if i never read any other green's book, i probably won't read this. i think cancer related themes novel are just too much too handle and i am not very good in emotion department.
this book centered around two cancer-crossed lover who in my opinion was a perfect tearjerker. not because their unwillingness to live but their ignorance to the normalcy and the need to face the world and the consequences.
in the book, i think hazel's really wanted to find out what happened to anna's mother (an imperial affliction) because that is the thing that she had access to. she will never find out what will happen to her parents when she died and maybe in figuring out what happened to anna's mother, she'll have a clue on what will happened to her parents.
i think the book also tell us that we can never be well prepared. our lives are not something that is predictable. in hazel case, she was so ready, so prepared to be the one that leaves everyone behind; her parents, augustus, isaac... but she was never ready being the ones that was left behind. that's why augustus' death had  been a huge blow for her.
yet, hazel shows us that lives must go on. she still had her parents and maybe the epiloque of 'the imperial affliction' waiting for her. her parents also promised her that their lives will also go on even when she is gone because the one that make the world  moving is the living, not the dead.

i won't give you the synopsis or anything because to reveal too much is like a crime because this book is so beautiful.

i can't relate myself to hazel in any way. i don't have cancer and i also never lost anyone i love. but if i were her, i can't imagine waking up every morning and being thankful that i am breathing and alive.

movie review: tower of terror

ahhh.... nothing says memories like disney's classic. this one is worth mentioning.
i gotta say, who ever missed this movie in their childhood years really did missed something  ( i didn't and my childhood is awesome).
and p/s kirten dunst was so cute in this movie.

now everyone go to youtube and type out this movie. kthanxbai...

movie review: teen spirit

another pigeonholed american teenagers movie. need i say more?
it was a good stress relief movie, a bit funny and a little message (be who you are, be  confident bla, bla).
the story is about amber pollock, a super vicious, high heels and red cklaws high school queen bee who died on the night she was crowned prom queen. when   she was up there she was given a chance to redeem herself by making the least popular girl, lisa sommer the prom queen in a week. can she make it? only heaven knows...

movies review: december boys

watching this because daniel radcliffe was in it.

it leads us to the journey of four orphaned boys, all born in December, in a quest of family and friendship.
This story told about the real meaning of family and what it is to had one.
this movie is also about coming of  age (coughsexytimecough) and the truth that not all things are as it seemed.
a quite good find , if i might add, and as per usual, independent film always had a way with their presentation.

book review: the da vinci code

leonardo da vinci is, simply put, a troll.

finished this book yesterday evening and was totally satisfied with the ending.
it is a spiraling descend into the truth  laced with puzzles and riddles. it is the best thriller i have ever read. dan brown is a great author with great imagination and superb research that lead to the writing of this book.
the plot is fast paced that it make your adrenaline rush. the beginning is quite slow yet once the clues start coming, the mental gears start rolling and the plot start pacing. the mood of the novel is what you will expect from reading a thriller. surprise on every corner.
dan brown also managed to hid yet reveal the clues is a simple way. he can be unwilling to give away clues at one chapter and the next he threw clues here and there.
the moral of the story is maybe you wont find what you're looking for if you look too hard. sometimes the answer just come to  and when looking for something, you may find something that you are not looking for

book review: to kill a mockingbird

To Kill a Mockingbird
one of the america's classics. to kill a mockingbird by harper lee is an outstanding story in a point of a 8 year old view along with her brother's and also her father's and people around them.
considering that the book is classic, the wording are a bit classic yet told by an 8 year-old point of view, it wasn't that hard to understand.
this piece of work is controversional; with the theme of racism being the main center of it. the book also deal with the theme of violence and alienation.
this book told how atticus (scout and jem's father), a lawyer, defended a black man in the court. it was a risky decision, to represent a black man in court during that time. and during the time the kids learn what is the meaning of humanity, folks and also rasism.
as children they view people as people. (dill cried when he saw injustice for the black man, tom robinson in court) the injustice was in plain view that everyone saw it, yet few people do something about it.
when tom robinson was charged guilty to the crime that he didn't commit, the kids were both saddened and angry.

this is a great book, no doubt about it. i highly recommended this.

“Atticus said to Jem one day, "I’d rather you shot at tin cans in the backyard, but I know you’ll go after birds. Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird." That was the only time I ever heard Atticus say it was a sin to do something, and I asked Miss Maudie about it. "Your father’s right," she said. "Mockingbirds don’t do one thing except make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corn cribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.”

movie review: the hunger games

thanks to my sister who bought me the dvd, i managed to watch the movie. i figure out that my sister is as much into movie as i  am. hafizah, you are one cool sister...

so... how do i describe the movie????
technically i was a bit disappointed. considering that i read the book before i watch the movie, i was expecting something more.
it's like there's less kicks in the movie. the characters were ok, not great.
the action's were less challenging.
it is safe to say that midway through the movies, my mind wanders off and i didn't bother to watch it again.
all and all it is still better, considering the budget and all. maybe bcoz this is the first film and the producer are making it audience friendly (ahem pg rating).
i hope the second and the third movie will be better....

movie review: the king's speech

british english is sexy english
bbc british english spoken in royal accent, HOT
nice story and for once Helena bonham carter is a normal woman, not some crazy lady remeber (preety little mudblood and off with the head!)
good movie for those who study language, seriously

movie review: sorority wars

another sorority story
another chick flick
you see the  beginning, you know the end.
what's in the middle is somewhere you have watched in every disneys chick flicks

watched it only for entertainment values

movie review: the emperor's club

once ateacher, always a teacher. they say when we be a teacheer, we will always be a teacher. or in malay term, cikgu.
kebun sapa tu? kebun cikgu...
anak sapa tu? anak cikgu...
kubur siapa tu, kubur cikgu...

it's also deals with the hars reality that how matter how good you tried and how much you believe there is just maybe someone who will never be like you hoped to be despite the sacrificial  that you had made.
this is my friends, is the best teacher based movie i've ever see yet.

all i have to say is that it's is better for you to watch it to understand it.
